We are in the midst of a crisis of information. We have unprecedented access to information, but in the United States there is historically low trust in traditional news media, and that trust is sharply polarized along political lines. There is widespread suspicion of political bias in news reporting and a surge in fake news and discredited science circulating in public life. Much information comes to us through social media, mediated by companies that profit from our attention, not from the truth. Confirmation bias helps forge epistemic bubbles and echo chambers that can cut us off from the truth altogether.
