1. Marx writes as follows in The Marx-Engels Reader (p. 476):
“The bourgeoisie cannot exist without constantly revolutionizing the instruments
of production, and thereby the relations of production, and with them the whole
relations of society. Conservation of the old modes of production in unaltered form,
was, on the contrary, the first condition of all earlier industrial classes. Constant
revolutionizing of production, uninterrupted disturbance of all social conditions, everlasting uncertainty and agitation distinguish the bourgeois epoch from all earlier ones. All fixed, fast-frozen relations, with their train of ancient and venerable prejudices and opinions are swept away, all new-formed ones become antiquated before they can ossify. All that is solid melts into air, all that is holy is profaned, and man is at last compelled to face with sober senses, his real conditions of life, and his relations with his kind.”
Use this passage to reflect on dialectical materialism. Be sure to articulate the (5) five concepts that make up this engine and how they inter-relate. Be sure to use examples to illustrate your points.
2. Discuss and critically analyze Nisbet’s unit ideas of Sociology. Note the forces which gave rise to these ideas, and note how interest was expressed in these ideas. Finally, is there a certain affinity between these ideas and conservative philosophy? If so, what does this say about the nature of sociological theory?
3. Discuss and critically analyze Durkheim’s rationale, conceptualization, and explanation of religion and religious phenomena. Be sure to use examples to illustrate your points.
