Carlos Bulosan’s novel America is in the Heart. A thoughtful two-page reflection paper on how it represents wider themes in US history.
The reflection paper should not simply be a summary list of what happened. I am most interested in your thoughts. Share surprising ideas or topics from the book and how themes within the book reflect ideas and concepts we’ve covered in the course. Some ideas for reflection may be US race relations, labor relations, popular vs. evidence-based history, historical memory (and forgetting history happened), capitalism and industry in the West, families and immigration history, among others.
Responses should include evidence of critical thinking on the novel, additional information from outside research (with appropriate links or sources cited in proper format), or other information that shows me you spent some time reading and considering the information in the book. Your own open-ended questions, thoughts, ideas, and other evidence-backed personal reflections are highly encouraged, your assignment does not need to contain solid conclusions or answers only. Please cite page numbers within the text of your paper when describing a scene, as shown in this example:
“Ideally, each individual would cultivate a repertoire of styles of attention, appropriate to different situations, and would learn how to embed activities and types of attention one within another” (Bateson, 97).
Include appropriately formatted citation information in your paper heading for whichever version of the novel you use, as in this example:
